Hypoplastic left heart syndrome causes the right side of the heart, with less muscle, to perform both pulmonary and system circulation. While the right ventricle can perform this double duty, the much greater strain on the less muscular side of the heart will eventually cause it to fail.

Babies with hypoplastic left heart syndrome treatment may initially require a ventilator just in order to breathe and are typically placed in a neonatal intensive care unit. Drugs are given to prevent the regular formation of the heart that occurs in the first few days after birth, which is the only way to maintain circulation to the body. This surgery will be to create a new aorta by one of several methods, depending upon the extent of the hypoplastic left heart syndrome. The second surgery usually occurs four to six months later, which will connect the vein carrying blood from the top half of the body to the pulmonary arteries, the blood vessels to the lungs. A third surgery is required to connect the veins carrying the blood from the lower portion of the body to the pulmonary arteries. Additional surgeries may be required later in life to correct complications from these surgeries or if additional cardiac problems present themselves.
